Barely a few days after the launch of the infamous Obedient
Wives Club in the Batu Kawa new township in Sarawak, PKR's women section and
DAP Batu Kawa state assemblywoman, Christina Chiew, ganged together to condemn
the OWC, advising women to be sensible and stay away from it.
When it was launched last Sunday with its first branch at
Batu Kawa, the women from both parties were horrified that such a degrading
club could make its way to Sarawakian shores. The main aim of the OWC is to
teach women how to be first-class prostitutes in bed to ensure that their
husbands do not stray.
In a joint press conference at the PKR Stampin branch, Chiew
said she was ashamed that such a club was set up in her constituency. “I think
the women in my constituency and those in Kuching or Sarawak do not need this
club to teach them how to please their husbands. It brings the women back to
the stone-age era where their husbands’ every demand is to be fulfilled at all
times. Sex will not keep a marriage happy if there is no respect, love or
care,” she said.
Are
men really such animals?
Christina lamented the claim of OWC vice president Dr Rohaya
Mohamad that sexual prowess would keep a husband from straying as likening men
to animals where sex is everything and everything is sex. Today’s husbands want
their wives to be smart, intelligent and be equal partners, she added.
But to Rohaya, a good and religious wife should be sexually
good in bed too. Then and only then would the family institution be protected
and social ills like prostitution, domestic violence, human trafficking and
abandoned babies be solved, claimed Rohaya. If not, these problem would
surfaced due to unfulfilled sexual needs at home.
The Sarawak OWC, headed by Nurul Jannah Abdul Razak, says it
already has over 200 members. Hot on the list of programs offered was the
course teaching women how to sexually serve their husbands. It seems surreal
given the conservative stance Islam has over sex and male-female relations as a
whole.
The
name alone degrades women
Sarawak PKR women's chief Nurhanim Mokshen said the name,
Obedient Wives Club, was itself degrading to women.
“Before marriage, Muslim couples have to undergo counselling
on what marriage is all about. It certainly did not tell us that sex is the
number one priority on the list. Even if there are problems in marriages, there
are several channels in the Majlis Islam for both men and women to seek help. I
think to go to the OWC would worsen a marriage by bringing a woman's
self-esteem and confidence lower,” she added.
Advising women not to join the club, Nurhanim said the
Sarawak women should stand tall and not let such stone-age thinking pervade the
state's women. “I believe smart men would also feel humiliated if their wives
were to go and learn to be high-class prostitutes just to win their hearts.”
Even Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, Fatimah
Abdullah had told the local press that the struggle of women in the state
should be much bigger than what was being staked by the OWC. Women in the state
should fight for bigger things in their lives such as security, economy,
education, career, welfare, their children, or even politics and not focus on
sex and nothing but sex as the perfect cure-all.
