True Blood's Kristin Bauer Drops Hints About Season 4

Kristin Bauer couldn’t have asked for a better role than Pam: the straight-talking, Southern vampire belle, whose biting wit suppliesTrue Blood some of its most memorable one-liners. According to Bauer, the best part of Pam is her unique outlook on things.

“Her focus is so simple,” says the actress, 38. “Our lives as humans are so complicated and she just left that world behind and good riddance.

Her priorities are clothing, hot chicks, and Eric [played by Alexander Skarsgard]. And making money.”

With the HBO hit’s fourth season around the corner (it premieres June 26), Bauer chats with Parade.com about the latest chaos in Bon Temps, turning Pam into a fighter, and the relationship between Pam and Anna Paquin’s character Sookie Stackhouse.

What did the cast think of the season’s first episode? Read on to find out!

Will the cast watch the premiere together?

"We already did actually! They had a cast screening and it was really nice. I happened to be shooting that day, but the people who weren't came too. It was the cast and the crew and we had a fabulous catered lunch. They got a whole stage and a big screen. It was pretty awesome. After the lunch, we went back to work and the whole energy on the set changed. It went from everybody being tired shooting episode 11 to completely jazzed."

But you already knew what was going to happen because of the script, right?

"I was saying to everyone all day that if you held a gun to my head I wouldn't know what we did in episode one since we shot it in December. They all sort of blend together for us and there is no way you can keep track of what happens in the other worlds. That's what's fun about this show: you can be a total fan and be on it."

What did the cast think of the episode?

"I think we all tend to be a little nervous about our performance. After we watched it, everyone was running up to each other saying how good it was and how good it looked. All the actors just felt really relieved and we kept commenting on how good everybody was. We were also commenting on how good it looks. Every year it gets a little richer."

Is there a marked difference with how it looked from last season?

"I think so. Every year I feel like we're getting better at it, and we felt like we took another jump this year. There are twelve episodes, and it's kind of sad that we're almost done. I can't believe another season has gone by."

Do you know how Season 4 ends already?

"No. We just got episode twelve, and we were shooting out of town at nights, so I haven't looked at it yet. I'll probably get to read it today when I have a break."

Will we get a better sense of Pam's back story finally?

"A little bit. Every year they give me a little more and the other thing they've been doing is we have a little more of her personality. Pam is so hard and sarcastic but last year we saw her vulnerable side when it came to Eric, but oftentimes I wonder if she has a warrior side, a tough side.”

Do we find out how she was turned into a vampire?

"We get a peek into it but every year I'm hoping more and more. We get a pretty good teaser though."

The 30 sexiest vampires of all time

How does she change this season?

“This year, we find out what her edgy side looks like. She's much more aggressive this year and that's really fun to play."

Season 3 showed a sweeter side of Pam and Eric's relationship. How does that progress?

"We do see it develop quite a bit. There was that clip with the witch where she says, 'Fix my maker.' We've seen that the one thing she needs is Eric and the witches erased his memory. So we get to see her relationship to him through her actions and emotions. It's very, very touching and at times entertaining the way our writers write."

Pam and Sookie have always had some sexual tension. Is that also a part of Season 4?

"We do find out more about that and kind of why she has that and it does continue, which I love. There is a great, great tension between Pam and Sookie this year. It's really fun."

There are tons of love triangles already. Will there be anyone else added to the mix to spice things up even more?

"Well, for Pam, this year is not necessarily a romantic year, but a fighting year. She's more in her warrior mode this year."

That's true. We've never really seen Pam fight like the other vampires have.

"Well, she definitely wants to fight, that much I'll tell you. She's definitely looking for a fight. I don't know if she gets one but she's looking."

What element do the witches bring to the story line?

"Rooting for Pam is like rooting for the mafia. But you do root for her. What's great about the writers, and it's in the books, is that everybody is pushed and tested. The supernatural world really helps. Last year it was the werewolves and the vampire politics. So they found a different way this year and the witches are there to really test and challenge everybody. They use it in a clever way because it reveals another side in each character. Every character we've known, even in the non-vampire world, another side of a person gets revealed. I think that's way the PR campaign was 'Show your true colors.' I think with each character you're seeing their true colors."

Pam is the lone sexual female vampire. Will we see more of that of her side this season?

"Is it even possible to have more sex on True Blood? What would that look like? [laughs] It feels to me that, in the best way, we get a little more of everybody. Not bigger but deeper. It's very clever writing."

Which character will surprise fans the most this season?

"That's a race. I love to watch all of the characters but I'm a huge Chris Bauer and Ryan Kwanten fan. It's not that they have more reveals or more true colors shown, it's just that when I think about it and compare, I think, 'Wow, they have some really good character-revealing moments.'"

How would you describe this season versus the past three?

"I'm very biased and very much an actor so it's all about me. People ask me what my favorite scene is and it's always the one I shot last week since it's the clearest in my memory and I have the most invested in it. So for me and for Pam, the season of the witch has been a really challenging year. I don't know if everyone else feels this way but it just feels like we've gone to new depths in the ocean and we just see a whole new layer of life that way. It's incredibly fun."
