Cambodia bans maids from working in Malaysia


Cambodia has imposed a temporary ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia following numerous complaints of abuse, the government said Monday, in a move hailed by rights groups.
An order was signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen following "some negative information" about the working environment of Cambodian maids in Malaysia, Oum Mean, secretary of state at the ministry of labour, told AFP.

Anwar's defence closes in Malaysian sodomy trial


The defence team for Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim closed its case on Monday, with a verdict in his long-running sodomy trial expected by the end of the year.
Anwar, 64, is charged with sodomising a young male aide in June 2008. He denies the allegations and says they were cooked up with Prime Minister Najib Razak's involvement to cripple the opposition's chances in coming elections.

Vietnamese woman cuts off Taiwan husband's penis


A woman cut off her husband's penis with a pair of scissors and threw the severed member into a river in revenge for his affair with another woman and his physical abuse, police in Taiwan said Sunday.
The 30-year-old Vietnamese woman, identified only by her surname, Pan, cut off about half her husband's penis at their home in the southern city of Tainan after he took drugs and sleeping pills and fell asleep, police said.

Thai city offers bounty for fugitive crocodiles


The ancient Thai city of Ayutthaya, which has seen its temple engulfed in the kingdom's flood crisis, has discovered a new menace lurking in the floodwaters -- crocodiles.
Around 100 reptiles are thought to be on the loose after escaping from farms in the area and authorities have issued a 1,000 baht ($33) bounty for each crocodile caught alive, said Public Health Minister Vitthaya Buranasiri.
